How To Choose Diabetic Footwear

What to actually look for when shopping for diabetic-friendly shoes and sandals.

Diabetic footwear is designed with a few priorities in mind: reducing pressure points, minimizing friction, and giving feet room to breathe. Here’s what’s worth looking for:

A seamless, soft interior. Internal seams and stitching can rub and irritate sensitive skin over a full day of wear.

Room in the toe box. Feet should be able to sit naturally without the toes being squeezed together.

Adjustable fit. Laces, straps or velcro allow the shoe to accommodate swelling that can change through the day.

Breathable materials. Good airflow helps keep feet dry, which matters for skin health.

A supportive, cushioned sole. This helps distribute pressure evenly rather than concentrating it on one area of the foot.

If you have existing foot conditions, it’s worth having your feet properly measured and, where possible, getting guidance from a podiatrist or your healthcare provider before choosing footwear.
