Diabetes can affect circulation and sensation in the feet over time, which is why daily foot care is often recommended as part of everyday routine. A few simple habits go a long way:
Check daily. Look over both feet — including between the toes and the soles — for cuts, blisters, redness or swelling.
Wash and dry thoroughly. Clean feet daily with lukewarm water, and dry carefully, especially between the toes.
Moisturize, but not between the toes. Keeping skin from cracking helps prevent small wounds — but excess moisture between toes can encourage fungal issues.
Trim nails carefully. Cut straight across to avoid ingrown nails, and see a professional if trimming is difficult.
Wear proper footwear. Well-fitted, supportive shoes and seamless socks reduce friction and pressure points. Avoid walking barefoot, even at home.
If you notice a cut, sore or area of numbness that isn’t healing, contact your healthcare provider promptly rather than waiting.
