What Is Continuous Glucose Monitoring?

A plain-language introduction to continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and how it differs from traditional testing.

Continuous glucose monitoring, or CGM, is a way of tracking glucose levels throughout the day and night using a small sensor worn on the body — typically on the back of the upper arm. Instead of a single fingerstick reading at one moment in time, a CGM device takes readings continuously, building a picture of how glucose levels move up and down over hours and days.

Devices like the FreeStyle Libre 2 use a coin-sized sensor that sits just under the skin’s surface. The sensor can be scanned with a compatible smartphone app or a dedicated reader device to show a current reading, a trend arrow, and recent history — without a fingerstick for everyday readings.

For many people, the appeal of CGM is visibility: seeing how food, activity, sleep and daily routine relate to glucose trends over time, rather than a single snapshot.

Every person’s situation is different, and how (or whether) to use CGM is a decision to make with your healthcare provider.
